The Modern Gentleman’s Guide to Watches: Do You Really Need an Expensive Timepiece?

Men's guide to collectable watches

For generations, a quality wristwatch was almost a rite of passage. It marked graduations, promotions, anniversaries and retirement. Long before smartphones appeared, a watch was one of the few accessories a man would wear every day.

Today, almost everyone carries a phone that displays the time with perfect accuracy. Yet the global watch industry continues to thrive, with luxury brands reporting strong demand and more affordable manufacturers offering impressive quality at accessible prices.

So, is a premium watch still worth buying?

A Watch Is More Than a Clock

Ask a collector why they own several watches and the answer is rarely, "To tell the time."

Instead, watches have become expressions of personality. They can reflect an appreciation of engineering, design, history or craftsmanship. A well-chosen watch often says something about its owner without a single word being spoken.

Unlike many consumer products, a good watch can last decades and, with regular servicing, may even be passed on to the next generation.

Mechanical or Quartz?

Modern buyers generally have two broad choices.

Quartz watches use a battery and electronic movement. They are highly accurate, require little maintenance and are available across every price range.

Mechanical watches, whether manually wound or automatic, rely on intricate engineering rather than electronics. Many enthusiasts admire the hundreds of tiny moving parts working together inside the case. While they may require periodic servicing, they are often viewed as miniature works of mechanical art.

Neither is inherently better. The right choice depends on whether the owner values practicality or craftsmanship.

Luxury Isn't the Only Option

There was a time when buying a quality watch often meant spending thousands of dollars.

Today, competition has transformed the market.

Japanese manufacturers continue to produce reliable, well-finished watches at modest prices. European brands occupy the premium end of the market, while a growing number of microbrands are producing distinctive designs with excellent specifications.

For many men, spending between $300 and $1,500 can deliver outstanding quality that will provide years of enjoyment.

Smartwatches Have Changed Expectations

Smartwatches now monitor heart rate, sleep quality, exercise, navigation, notifications and even emergency calls.

For some men, these features have replaced the traditional wristwatch entirely.

Others take a different approach: wearing a smartwatch during work or exercise, then changing to a mechanical or classic analogue watch for evenings, weekends or formal occasions.

Rather than replacing traditional watches, technology has expanded the choices available.

Buying for the Right Reasons

A luxury watch should never be viewed as a guaranteed investment. While certain rare models have appreciated significantly, most watches are purchased for enjoyment rather than financial return.

The better question is simple:

"Will I still enjoy wearing this watch ten years from now?"

If the answer is yes, the purchase may prove worthwhile regardless of what happens to resale values.

Building a Small Collection

Many enthusiasts eventually settle on three practical watches:

  • A versatile everyday watch suitable for work.
  • A sports or outdoor watch designed for active weekends.
  • A dress watch for formal occasions.

This combination covers almost every situation without needing an extensive collection.

Looking After Your Watch

Even modestly priced watches benefit from basic care.

Avoid unnecessary impacts, keep water-resistant seals maintained, store automatic watches safely when not in use and have mechanical models serviced at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer.

A little maintenance can keep a quality watch running for decades.

The Men.com.au View

The finest watch is not necessarily the most expensive one. It is the watch that suits your lifestyle, reflects your personality and still makes you smile every time you fasten it to your wrist.

Whether it costs a few hundred dollars or many thousands, a well-chosen watch remains one of the few possessions that combines engineering, style and personal meaning. In an increasingly digital world, that quiet craftsmanship may be more appealing than ever.
