What's In Your Shampoo & Why You Should Care
If you have ever struggled with dandruff you know it can be downright embarrassing at times. Aren't we all tired of going out there and worrying about stuff falling off our heads? Or, in my case, figuring out how to stop the blizzard of junk that falls out of my face whenever I scratch my beard. Fortunately, there are actually solutions to this problem, But too few of us men know what the heck it is we're putting in our hair.
Big brand shampoos and conditioners are marketed as the best solution, but then we get the same results as the last big brand we tried. Same flakey results. Not only that, but it's actually really common for these companies to put ingredients that are really bad for us in their bottles. So enough is enough. We're here to discuss why you should ditch your synthetic shampoos and switch to a natural shampoo.
Know your ingredients
As recent as December 2021, cosmetic giant Proctor & Gamble recalled 32 hair products because of carcinogen concerns*. Sadly this is a common issue within the cosmetics industry. Whether it's their history of testing products on animals or using chemicals that are not good for us, it has become clear that using natural products is the best way to go. One way to do that is to look at the ingredients list when shopping for your products. Here are a few to look out for.
Polyethylene Glycols (PEG)
Although they are derived from petroleum, polyethylene glycols (PEGs) are not toxic. However, the by-products of PEGs have been linked to harmful effects*.
Quaternium-15
Formaldehyde is a scary ingredient in shampoo. It's a known human carcinogen. Manufacturers use it directly as a preservative or release it through chemical processes in other types of preservatives. One common formaldehyde-releaser is quaternium-15.
Some Alcohols
Alcohol is another very common ingredient in shampoo. Don't be confused. It can actually help hair retain moisture and make it feel softer by helping the scalp absorb its natural oils*. So some alcohols are actually GOOD for dry hair because they don't have drying effects. The good ones usually start with either a "C" or an "S", like Cetearyl alcohol and Stearyl alcohol. Still, the ones you want to avoid if you have dry hair starts with a "prop", like Isopropyl alcohol or propanol.
What a pain it is to read ingredients every time you want to find a good shampoo for dandruff or beard oil. Choosing the best shampoo can be a difficult task, but it's important to find the right product when you have dandruff or itchy scalp.
