Millennial and Gen Z men are saying no to hair loss, taking advantage of in-home treatments which are more effective and more widely available than for generations before them.

Data from men’s online health platform Mosh reveals over 60 percent of hair loss patients are under 35 and of those, 87 percent are seeking hair loss prevention.

Dermatologist and Mosh consultant Dr Niyati Sharma said taking action at the first signs of hair loss means baldness doesn’t have to be an inevitable part of life.

“With the treatments available, it is always possible to thicken and increase the density of existing hair but once an area has lost all of its hair, it becomes difficult to grow back,” Dr Sharma added.

“It’s good to get onto the problem early because oral medication and topical treatments to stop hair loss and grow hair back can be taken indefinitely.

“Some men might then consider a hair transplant down the track.”

While hair loss can be associated with ageing, Dr Sharma said there are many other contributing factors.

“Hair loss can be caused by so many unexpected things, like grief, trauma, medication changes or vitamin deficiencies.

“Sickness can also be a trigger. In recent years there has been a significant increase in men and women experiencing hair loss because of the COVID-19 pandemic”.

A major factor contributing to the increase in younger men addressing hair loss is accessibility.

“For a lot of men, a condition like hair loss can be embarrassing to talk about, or patients don’t have time to attend in person appointments. From what I’ve seen, an online appointment can be far more effective as patients are more likely to stick to appointments and speak openly about their situation”.
