Father’s Day spending is expected to hit $1 billion this year, according to new research by Finder

A new nationally representative survey of 1,058 respondents revealed the average Australian who celebrates Father’s Day is planning to spend $108 on their dad.

The research shows almost half of Australians (47%) will be giving a Father’s Day gift this September, while the majority (53%) won’t.

The top three most popular gifts for dads include clothing (9%), a meal out (9%) and something for his home or car (7%).

Chris Jager, shopping expert at Finder, said some Aussies spare no expense when it comes to honouring dads.

“Australians are feeling very generous this year to ensure Fathers Day is a special one.

“Many are still making up for lost time due to the Covid pandemic.”

Alcohol (7%), homemade food or gifts (6%) and chocolate (4%) are other popular Father’s Day gifts.

Sons are more generous, planning to spend $124 on average, compared to $91 by daughters.

Jager said there was still plenty of time to get a gift for dad.

“There’s about a week to go until Father’s Day, so if you haven’t organised something yet, it’s time to get cracking.

“If you're struggling to find the right gift or experience, Finder has a bunch of ideas for every budget.

“For those who are a little tight on cash, something as simple as a home cooked meal or a walk in the park is a great way to celebrate the day with dad,” Jager said.

Finder’s research reveals those from New South Wales and Queensland are the most generous, with those from both states planning to spend $113 on average on their fathers.

South Australians are the tightest, forking out just $85.
